The County Authority of East Sussex decided to build a new asylum at the turn of the twentieth century because of problems of overcrowding at the Haywards Heath Asylum, formerly the Sussex County Asylum.[1] To this end the County Council purchased the 400-acre Park Farm estate, a short distance from Hellingly village and railway station, from the earl of Chichester for £16,000. Construction began in 1898 and the new asylum was built to a compact arrow plan by George Thomas Hine, consultant architect to the Commissioners in Lunacy. The hospital opened on 20 July 1903 at a total cost of £353,400.
The main complex comprised an administrative block, central stores, kitchens, a recreation hall and the assistant medical officer's residence. Like most large institutions of this age and type the sexes were separated into separate accommodation and work areas.
Unfortunately due to the nature of asylums at the time most residents that passed away were buried in unmarked graves, the CO - Ords take you to a Memorial to those buried here..... whilst looking at the grave stone, look to your right and follow the path to the end and you may find a Bat at the base of the tree.....

Oh my, this all began weeks ago. Diaries were cleared and the weekend plans were hatched. The forecast was for hideous weather but that wouldn’t deter us. Last night we rushed out and in the darkness at the fort hustled around to beat others to the bat. Huge fun job done. Today we have been refreshing emails every 5 mins, then we had the call, they have been published, quick!! Called to arms we set about, then, no, they’re all in Scotland. Ok, so where might they be published? Off we went to Pevensey, that’s a good castle, maybe there? Refresh, no nothing. Ok so hanging out we finally had lunch, paid up front and continued to refresh. ITS OUT! Meal paid, we literally scarpered. Thirteen minutes. Thirteen long minutes. No footpath arghh! Running here, there, then it must be there! Thanks boys, it was fun running around and success I have my prize. But best of all, I had immense fun. More to come, bring on the night event. |
