New Jersey supports 6 year-round resident bat species and 3 part-time residents. The bats you’re most likely to come in contact with are big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) and little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus). Most bats (including those here in New Jersey) are insectivores, which means that they have no interest at all in biting you, nor do they want to root around in your hair. Bats eat tons of mosquitoes and simply want to be left alone. That said, they do like to go for the occasional “night out”, and rumor has it that this is where they often come for late night dancing. After the soirée (they’re particularly fond of cha-cha-ing into the wee hours ) they come here to rest and roost for the night.
