N 22nd St, Old Seminole Heights, Tampa, FL, US
By law, all Florida counties must provide for those who otherwise can not afford a place to live, a hospital for when they are sick, and/or a burial place in which they may be buried. Hillsborough County purchased a 120-acre farm in 1905 to be developed for this purpose. In 1906 a one-acre plot of this ground was reserved for use as the pauper's burial cemetery, or "Potter's Field".
All graves were marked with a stone marker inscribed only with a number. Due to a fire, there are no present records of the grave site plot plans. The only list that survives contains names and death dates but not where in the cemetery/at what plot the deceased was interred.
You can not drive into the cemetery so you’ll have to pull off along 22nd St. Please be careful as this is a busy street. Look under the rock at the historical marker.
