280 - Bump in the Night - Pumpkin

S Elizabeth St, Downtown, Pueblo, CO, US location_on N 38 16.000, W 104 36.790

Pumpkins are commonly carved into decorative lanterns called jack-o'-lanterns for the Halloween season. Traditionally Britain and Ireland would carve lanterns from vegetables, particularly the turnip, mangelwurzel, or swede,[52]. They continue to be popular choices today as carved lanterns in Scotland and Northern Ireland, although the British purchased a million pumpkins for Halloween in 2004.[53] The practice of carving pumpkins for Halloween originated from an Irish myth about a man named "Stingy Jack".[17] The turnip has traditionally been used in Ireland and Scotland at Halloween,[54] but immigrants to North America used the native pumpkin, which are both readily available and much larger – making them easier to carve than turnips.[54] Not until 1837 does jack-o'-lantern appear as a term for a carved vegetable lantern,[55] and the carved pumpkin lantern association with Halloween is recorded in 1866.[56] In the United States, the carved pumpkin was first associated with the harvest season in general, long before it became an emblem of Halloween.[57] In 1900, an article on Thanksgiving entertaining recommended a lit jack-o'-lantern as part of the festivities that encourage kids and families to join together to make their own jack-o'-lanterns.[57] Association of pumpkins with harvest time and pumpkin pie at Canadian and American Thanksgiving reinforce its iconic role. Starbucks turned this association into marketing with its pumpkin spice latte, introduced in 2003.[58] This has led to a notable trend in pumpkin and spice flavored food products in North America.[59] This is despite the fact that North Americans rarely buy whole pumpkins to eat other than when carving jack-o'-lanterns. Illinois farmer Sarah Frey is called "the Pumpkin Queen of America" and sells around five million pumpkins annually, predominantly for use as lanterns.[60][61]

344 - Deadman’s Point

Harris Ave, Fairhaven, Bellingham, WA, US location_on N 48 43.211, W 122 30.959

This point of land has a rich history in the settlement and development of the town of Fairhaven. In 1853, Alonzo M. Poe filed a donation land claim on this property and built a cabin on top of a mound of glacial till some 80 to 90 feet high. This property became known as Poe’s Point. A Native American raid on Whidbey Island in 1857 unsettled the local inhabitants on Bellingham Bay, and they stationed two men as lookouts on top of Poe’s Point. According to the story, the men imbibed a fair amount of whiskey, fell asleep and became victims of the marauding Northern Native Americans. This point of land hence became known as "Deadman’s Point”. After moving to Olympia in 1858, Alonzo Poe deeded his property to his brother, Americus Poe. Dirty Dan Harris purchased 43 acres of Poe’s property that was immediately adjacent to his own land. He sold off part of the property to the County for a cemetery. The point then acquired a new name, "Graveyard Point”.

352 - Highlight Hidden Pictures

Malta, IL, US location_on N 41 56.311, W 088 52.072

This tag is NOT at this location. This is your starting point. Do you remember the Highlights books at the doctors offices? They had a hidden picture page. It was a picture with small hidden objects in it. Well.... this is your hidden picture game. From this starting point you will need to take a reading with your compass. From here, you will go 180° till you find a huge bowling pin. Once you find the bowling pin you will take another reading and go 150°. In this direction you will find a gray headstone with a large log looking thing on top. On both ends it will look like a print of a compass. To confirm you are at the correct one, it should say Martin and Elizabeth are here. From Martin and Elizabeth you will head 190°. In this direction you need to find the head stone with a Masonic symbol at the top. To confirm you're at the correct one, this gentleman passed on Sept. 18, 1864. From here you will head 210°. In this direction you will find a headstone with my husband's name on it. It is also the name of a medieval weapon. So, if you can figure out these clues, you will find what you seek under the north st corner of his backside. You may need tweezers for this one. As always, be respectful of all the locations and people visiting.
